At Home Worship on Christmas Day
We’re not gathering as a congregation on Christmas Day, but that doesn’t mean you can’t worship by yourself or with your family and friends. Here are some ideas for you to try!
FOR AN INDIVIDUAL OR THE WHOLE FAMILY:
–Read the Christmas story in the Bible: Luke 1-2 gives the whole story, but if you just want to read a shorter version, you can read 1:26-56 and 2:1-20.
–Watch a video:
This one is from the Cartoonists Bible and is a reading of the story with images. A Reading of the Christmas Story in Luke 2:1-20
This one is from The Bible Project and tells about the story in helpful and easy-to-understand terms– The Birth of Jesus: Luke 1-2
–Listen to some beautiful music. Our music director Sayaka Seki recorded music for us last year during Advent. You can hear them all on YouTube starting with this one: https://youtu.be/yuwwbGn1er4
–As you break bread today– alone or with others– say a prayer of thanks that God chose to enter our world–indeed, our very neighborhood– and that God promises to come again in fulfillment of God’s kingdom.
-Please pray for the homeless people in our community who have been out in the extremely cold weather.
–Consider bringing a plate or basket of food to someone who is working on Christmas. This could be our local firefighters or police officers of course, but it could also be that clerk who’s working at the gas station today, or the person bagging your last minute groceries at the store. They’ll appreciate being remembered.
FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN:
–Try playing out the Christmas story using a nativity set. Here are some ideas from the Presbyterian Outlook. https://tinyurl.com/424cn4d8
–Celebrate Jesus’ birthday! Sing happy birthday to the newborn Jesus. Consider giving baby gifts to a local women’s shelter. Wonder together what Jesus would’ve been like as a baby.
–Mary and Joseph knew that Jesus would be a special baby, but it was a surprise to everyone else– who would have thought that the King of Kings would be born in such a little place, with farm animals, and a manger for a bed? What has been the biggest surprise for you this year?
–Unplug. Be fully present with each other today.
